Software Concepts International (SCI) brings news this week that it’s booted and run OpenVMS V9.0 on a native x86 platform. The 9.0 release from VMS Software Incorporated (VSI) has been rolled out to select early adopters as of May 15. The release, which VSI considers a early adopter rollout, caps a multi-year effort to bring OpenVMS to the x86 architecture.
The release sets two milestones at once. SCI reports in a press release that within an hour of receiving the VSI software kit, OpenVMS V9.0 now runs in the Oracle High-Performance Cloud. The OpenVMS instance operates inside an Oracle VM VirtualBox environment. After completing an initial configuration, SCI ran some initial functionality tests. The OpenVMS running on x86 powers the SCI Toolset and other utilities. These SCI tools deliver remote managed services to customers around the globe.
“The installation went very smoothly and initial tests look great,” said Norm Lastovica, SCI Chief Technology Officer, “We look forward to the continued evolution of OpenVMS and the eventual migration to x86 opportunity this affords our customers.”
The software is on its feet at a company with a close working relationship with VSI. SCI is an original member of the VSI Professional Services Alliance. The vendor’s management considers those close ties to be the key to earning VSI’s choice as the very first 9.0 early adopter.
“SCI is proud that VSI chose us to be one of the earliest test sites for VSI’s future flagship product,” says Brad McCusker, SCI’s VP for OpenVMS System Services. “Many of our customers are anxious for VMS on x86. They look forward to working with VSI in testing and making OpenVMS for x86 ready for production.”
According to VSI’s published roadmap, V9.0 is now available to select partners and customers. Later in 2020, VSI will ship V9.1. That release represents a general release field test kit. A production-capable V9.2 ships in 2021.
