Oracle rolls out new SRU for Solaris

A new SRU 20 is available for download for Oracle Solaris 11.4. The April 2020 release is available via ‘pkg update’ from Oracle’s support repository. System administrators can also load the SRU or by downloading it from My Oracle Support. Use Doc ID 2433412.1.

This SRU introduces a new version of the International Components for Unicode. Oracle reminds us that “ICU is portable, and it gives applications the same results on all platforms and between C/C++ and Java software.” The newest version of ICU is now 65.1.

The SRU also updates a wide array of components. Oracle says these changes address security issues.

tcpdump: 4.9.3
libpcap:  1.9.1
sudo: 1.8.30
wireshark: 2.6.15
Apache Tomcat: 8.5.51
mod_auth_mellon: 0.16.0
Firefox: 68.6.0esr
PHP: 7.3.15
Thunderbird: 68.6.0

Openjpeg also has an update in the SRU.

Full details of this SRU live inside the My Oracle Support Doc 2657243.1. For the list of Service Alerts affecting each Oracle Solaris 11.4 SRU, see Important Oracle Solaris 11.4 SRU Issues (Doc ID 2445150.1).

Advantages always flow to an operating system in current status on a vendor’s product list. Solaris is an active product, although it is in declining use, which puts it into legacy territory. What’s important is that a wide range of tools, including Firefox and Thunderbird, got attention.

SRU19 from March has a bigger list of enhancements, by far. For example, Explorer 20.1 is now available. Also, the Meson build system is now in Solaris.

On the website Phoronix, the editors note that “important FreeDesktop.org components like X.Org and Mesa have also begun relying on Meson. Countless other open-source projects moving to it as well.”
