VSI introduces new SAMBA release

VMS Software, Incorporated (VSI) is pleased to announce the availability of Samba for OpenVMS Version 4.6-5A for VSI OpenVMS Integrity. This new version of Samba is based on open source Samba 4.6.5. Samba is an Open Source product that allows clients (Windows, Linux, Mac) to access file and print services provided by OpenVMS. Previous versions of Samba for OpenVMS were known as CIFS (Common Internet File System) for OpenVMS. For this and future releases, VSI will use the product name “Samba”.

Samba for OpenVMS version 4.6-5A represents a significant update, providing many new features and numerous enhancements, including support for:

AES encryption
SMB2 and SMB3 protocols
Use of Heimdal Kerberos

In addition, WINBIND functionality has been moved into a separate process, simplifying name resolution and frequency of lookups. VSI is providing this new functionality as part of our continuing efforts to modernize the VSI OpenVMS operating system and associated products. A VSI Alpha release based on Samba 4.6.5 will be provided in the coming months.

The kit is available for download from vsiftp.vmssoftware.com. For more information, please contact VSI at info@vmssoftware.com.
